Privacy
NameAlmanac asks you for nothing: there are no accounts, forms or newsletters. This page lists every tool that runs when you read it, what each one stores and how you can choose. Kiznis Studio (Lithuania), which operates NameAlmanac, is responsible for this data; write to hello@namealmanac.com.
Before and after you choose
Where the GDPR, the UK GDPR or Switzerland’s data protection act applies (the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), the consent banner of our ad network opens on your first visit. Until you choose, nothing is stored on your device except what security needs, Google Analytics is not loaded at all, and ads are not personalised; if the banner does not load, a browser set to a European time zone never loads Google Analytics. What you accept in the banner is passed to each tool, and you can change it at any time from the banner’s settings link. Elsewhere, Google Analytics loads after the page and advertising follows the ad network’s rules for your region; in the United States you can opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for advertising (see “Your choices” below).
What runs, what it stores, for how long
Journey by Mediavine
Serves the ads and runs the consent banner (IAB TCF v2.2); its partners bid for ad space. It stores or receives: cookies and similar identifiers, your IP address, device and browser details and the pages you read, set by Mediavine and its partners according to your choice and kept as Mediavine’s privacy policy sets out. Legal basis under the GDPR: your consent.
Google Analytics 4
Measures traffic and how pages are used. It stores or receives: cookies (_ga, kept up to 2 years) with a pseudonymous device identifier; pages viewed; an approximate location from the IP address, which Google does not store. Event data is kept for at most 14 months. Legal basis under the GDPR: your consent.
Umami (our own instance)
Counts visits per page, where they came from and the kind of device. It stores or receives: no cookies and no identifiers; the IP address is used only to count a visit and is not stored. Legal basis under the GDPR: legitimate interest in knowing which pages are read.
Cloudflare
Delivers the pages and blocks abusive traffic. It stores or receives: a security cookie (__cf_bm, 30 minutes) that tells people from bots; request logs, kept as Cloudflare’s privacy policy sets out. Legal basis under the GDPR: legitimate interest in security.
Our web server
Serves the pages. It stores or receives: an access log (IP address, time, page, browser), deleted after 7 days. Legal basis under the GDPR: legitimate interest in security and debugging.
Sentry
Reports errors on our server. When a page fails on the server, it receives the address requested, the browser and the time, kept for at most 90 days; nothing runs in your browser. Legal basis under the GDPR: legitimate interest in keeping the site working.
Your browser
Remembers the light or dark theme you picked. It stores or receives: one setting in local storage, which never leaves your device. Legal basis under the GDPR: needed for the feature you chose.
Each page also carries a Google account verification tag for the ad account Mediavine uses; it stores nothing. NameAlmanac has no accounts, forms or newsletters and keeps no data that identifies you. Google, Mediavine, its partners, Cloudflare and Sentry may process data in the United States and elsewhere; they rely on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses for those transfers.
Your choices
Change your consent at any time from the consent banner’s settings link. To opt out of personalised ads and of the sale or sharing of your personal information for advertising, use Mediavine’s choices at mediavine.com/ad-choices or optout.aboutads.info; Mediavine describes its own practices in its privacy policy. If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, NameAlmanac treats it as an opt-out of sale and sharing for the Google tags on this site, wherever you are and whatever you choose in the banner: they share no ad data with Google and ads are not personalised through them. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser.
Your rights
Where the GDPR, the UK GDPR or Switzerland’s data protection act applies, you can ask for access to data about you, its correction or deletion, a restriction of its use, and a copy in a portable form; you can object to use based on legitimate interest and withdraw consent at any time without affecting what came before. U.S. state laws give similar rights, including to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. Write to hello@namealmanac.com; we answer within a month. Because NameAlmanac itself holds nothing that identifies you, most requests concern the tools above, and we pass them on or tell you where to send them. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
