A spelling variant of Jon and John, with doubled ⟨n⟩ representing a short vowel followed by long /nː/. Ultimately a short form of Johannes, from Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yōḥānān, “Yahweh is gracious”). First attested in the early 19th century in Norway.
