Methodology
This directory is a static map of every section of NameAlmanac. Every link resolves to a live page rendered directly from the Social Security Administration's baby-name data — either a name profile, a ranking list, a decade or year rollup, a state page, or an editorial guide.
How we organize: Name pages are addressed by slug (/name/emma),
decade pages by start year (/decade/1990), year pages by year (/year/2024),
state pages by two-letter code (/state/ca), and state-decade pages by combining
both (/state/ca/1990s). Letter-level directory pages live under
/browse/names/.
Data lineage: Every page pulls from the same underlying SQLite database built from the SSA's public release files. No editorializing of the numbers — we display what the SSA publishes. Editorial commentary is clearly labeled and never modifies the underlying data.
Coverage and limits: The national file begins in 1880; state files begin in 1910. Names with fewer than five annual occurrences are suppressed by the SSA for privacy, so the directory does not include every name ever given in the United States — only those that crossed the disclosure threshold in at least one year.
